Handpin of bronze

Handpins are long dress fasteners with elaborate ends resembling a hand with outstretched bent fingers. This bronze example was found at Dunadd in Argyll. It is an Irish type, either brought from Ireland or copied in Scotland from an Irish example.

Bronze hand pin from Dunadd, Argyll, 500 - 700 AD

The royal hillfort of Dunadd was the capital of the Scottish Dál Riata, and many contacts with Ireland were maintained over the centuries.
