Knife handle
Add to album

This bronze handle is from a bistoury, a long surgical knife with a narrow blade. It was found at Cramond in Midlothian together with other medical tools which belonged to a Roman doctor. They were used sometime between 140 and 210 AD.

One end of the handle is spatula-shaped, while the other is ornamented and forks into two pieces.

The Roman army medical service was impressively equipped and could deal with a variety of injuries. They had eye lotions, potions and powders, and a range of surgical instruments.
