This piece of a tile was found at the site of the Roman fort at Mumrills in Stirlingshire. It is from a box flue tile, used in buildings to allow hot air to circulate within them. It was probably made locally for or by the army between 142 and 165 AD.

The tile has grooved lines, made to help the plaster grip the tile when attached to the walls.

An administrative system existed to ensure that the Roman army was supplied with food and other goods. Quartermasters were responsible for obtaining supplies, and dealt with army craftsmen, various traders, and the native population.
