Dish

This ceramic dish was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was made in the Thames estuary area of southeastern England between 140 and 180 AD.

The dish is of a type known as black burnished ware 2 (BB2), a kitchen ware made in southeastern England. The rim of the bowl is imperfect, and some of the base sherds are missing. It has lattice decoration on the sides, and a zigzag on the bottom.

The Roman army obtained supplies from three zones: locally (either by the army or natives), within the Roman province of Britannia, or further afield in the Roman empire.
