This pottery jar was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was imported from south-western England, perhaps for its contents, between 140 and 180 AD.

The jar is of a type known as black burnished ware 1 (BB1), a kitchen ware imported from southwestern England. The jar has been restored.

An administrative system existed to ensure that the Roman army was supplied with food and other goods. Quartermasters were responsible for obtaining supplies, and dealt with army craftsmen, various traders, and the native population.
