This bronze surgeon's probe was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It is one of a number of examples of medical equipment found at Roman forts in Scotland. The probe was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The Roman army medical service was impressively equipped and could deal with a variety of injuries. They had eye lotions, potions and powders, and a range of surgical instruments.
