Tent panel

This piece of leather is a panel from a Roman tent, found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort of Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The tent panel has a patch mark at one corner. It has been hemmed at the ends and one side.

The Romans mass-produced hides to meet the needs of the army. The demand for hides was vast: a tent for eight men needed about 70 goatskins, and the army in Scotland was some 15,000 strong. There were even factories for tanning leather.
