This piece of leather was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort of Newstead in Roxburghshire. It clearly shows stitching marks, although its use remains obscure. The piece dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

The piece of leather has stitch marks along two sides. A piece of leather was also folded in.

Leather was used for a wide range of objects necessary to a Roman soldier, including tents, saddles, harness, shoes, clothing, belts, purses, bags, shields and shield covers. Elsewhere in the Roman empire, there is evidence of taxes demanded in hides.
