Leather patch

This leather patch was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It could have been used to patch a variety of leather objects. It was used between 80 and 180 AD.

The patch has stitch marks around the edge and is pierced with two holes.

Leather only survives where conditions are favourable. A number of leather objects, including shoes, thongs, tent panels, saddle fragments, and clothing were preserved at Newstead, highlighting the range of leather objects needed by the army.
