Rope attachment

This leather rope attachment for a tent was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The rope attachment has stitch marks for a circular patch. There are two holes for a thong.

The Roman army was based in barracks in permanent forts, but on the march soldiers built temporary fortifications each night and slept in leather tents. Many tents were required: men slept eight to a tent, so a force of 20,000 men needed over 500 tents.
