These pieces of leather bags were found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They were used between 80 and 180 AD.

The larger piece on the left is five-sided and hemmed at the edges. The smaller piece on the right has stitch marks along each side.

Leather was used for a wide range of objects necessary to a Roman soldier, including tents, saddles, harness, shoes, clothing, belts, bags, shields and shield covers. Elsewhere in the Roman empire, there is even evidence of taxes demanded in hides.
