Add to album

This fragment of a glass bowl was found at Bertha in Perthshire. It was imported from the Mediterranean. Glass tableware was an expensive possession in Roman times but, as this fragment shows, was used even at the furthest reaches of Roman occupation.

Glass pillar-moulded bowl fragment, from Bertha, Perthshire, 80 - 90 AD

The Roman army obtained supplies from three zones: locally (either by the army or natives), within the Roman province of Britannia, or further afield in the Roman empire.
