Pottery sherd

This sherd of samian ware pottery was found at Birrens in Dumfriesshire. It is from the base of a vessel. The sherd dates from between 140 and 160 AD.

The sherd has been crudely etched with the inscription 'Ganniinco' and 'TC'. The former is probably the name of the owner, Gannenco.

Many Roman soldiers could read and write to some extent, and marked their names on their belongings.
