This fragment of a building stone with cable decoration was found at the site of the Roman fort at Birrens in Dumfriesshire. It was probably carved by an army craftsman or produced locally for the army between 122 and 180 AD.

The Roman army obtained supplies from three zones: locally (either by the army or natives), within the Roman province of Britannia, or further afield in the Roman empire.
