Knife

This flint knife was found at Hedderwick at Dunbar in East Lothian. It could have been used for a number of purposes, including skinning an animal. It dates from between 3800 and 1500 BC.

The elongated oval knife, has a flat undersurface and a convex upper surface. Such knives are known as 'plano-convex' or 'slug' knives. The upper surface has had small flakes removed at the edges.

Simple flint knives were used for various purposes throughout prehistory. Plano-convex (or 'slug') knives tend to be Early Bronze Age in date, although specimens from the Neolithic Age are known.
