Weight for a digging stick
Add to album

This weight for a digging stick was found at Balmaclellan in Kirkcudbrightshire. It is a long-lived form which could have been used between 7500 BC and 1100 AD.

The triangular-shaped pebble of porphyry has been smoothly perforated in the centre.

Gathering was an important means of obtaining food, especially in areas of poor soils. Some plant foods, such as roots, were grubbed up with digging sticks which were weighted to made digging easier.
