Whetstone found near St. Salvador's Chapel, Orkney

This whetstone of 'verde antico' was found near the ruins of St. Salvador's Chapel on Shapinsay in Orkney. It was probably obtained in Italy and taken back to Scotland as a pilgrim's souvenir between 800 and 1250 AD.

Whetstone of 'verde antico', found near the ruins of St Salvador Chapel, Shapinsay, Orkney, between 800 and 1250 AD

'Verde antico' is a green porphyry floor and wall covering used by Roman and Byzantine rulers in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean. Fragments of 'verde antico' tiles were taken away by early Christian pilgrims, as they were regarded as being holy.
