Mantle for gas lamp
Add to album

A mantle is a dome-shaped mesh used to increase illumination in a gas or oil lamp. This mantle for a gas lamp (pictured here with its card box) was made around 1920 at the Veritas Gas Mantle Works at Wandsworth in London.

The mantle consists of a dome of cream gauze tied onto a fireclay mount in the form of a ring with three outward-turned lugs. The box is printed on each face in red. On the front is 'VERITAS / ALPHA / INVERTED MANTLE / NO. 73769 / UNIVERSAL FITTING'.
