Goffering iron
Add to album

A goffering iron was used to iron plaits or ruffles. This example of cast iron and brass is from Perth.

The bullet-shaped iron fixings were heated in order to smooth out the cloth.

In Victorian and Edwardian times, washing and ironing was women's work. Poor women might make a little money by doing washing for richer families. New products made some tasks easier.
