This strip of black crepe was used to trim clothes to signify deep mourning.

Strip of black crepe used to trim clothing to signify deep mourning, 18th or 19th century

In the 19th century the etiquette of mourning became more complex and more widespread especially for women, reaching a height of popularity around 1850-85. Ladies' magazines gave advice on how to trim clothes with crepe.
