Candleholder

This iron candleholder from Galloway dates from the late 18th century.

The adjustable candleholder consists of an iron rod standing on tripod legs. At the top of the rod is a drip pan with a candle socket and a three-pronged holder.

Candles were made from wax or tallow - mutton fat or pig fat, or less commonly, beef fat.
