Add to album

This candleholder was used in the illumination of Edinburgh during the visit of King George IV in 1822. Made of tinned iron, it dates from the early 19th century.

The candleholder consists of a U-shaped strip forming a base, with a socket riveted to one side.

Candles were made from wax or tallow - mutton fat or pig fat, or less commonly, beef fat.
