Candleholder
Add to album

This stone candleholder was found built into the wall of an old house at Dalkeith in Midlothian. It dates from the 17th century.

The candleholder is in the form of a Roman altar. It has a hole in each corner and a larger circular depression in the centre.

It is thought the candle was introduced to Britain by the Romans. From then until the second quarter of the 19th century, it remained the most widely used form of artificial light.
