Add to album

This oil lamp of tinned iron was found in a cottage in Comrie in Perthshire. The cottage was demolished in 1946. The lamp dates from the 19th century.

The lamp has a cylindrical reservoir, and a funnel and tube leading down to a narrow box. A lid (missing) fits at the opposite end of the box. A flat wick projected through the lid. The wire loop attached to the reservoir must have held a glass funnel.

The name Comrie derives from the Gaelic, A'Chomhraich, meaning religious precinct.
