Sporran, with Arms of Macdonald of Clanranald

This silver-mounted horse-hair sporran, set with the arms of MacDonald of Clanranald, was worn by the 20th Chief of Clanranald in the second half of the 19th century.

Below the thistle-shaped clasp at the top of the sporran, the arms of the Clan can be seen with the motto 'My hope is Constant in Thee' above the escutcheon and the Gaelic motto translated as 'Gainsay Who Dare' below.

Ranald George, the 20th Chief, lost the whole family inheritance due to his extravagancies.
