Wooden boat bailer
Add to album

This wooden boat bailer was found in the peat at Grimsay on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. Wooden boat bailers must have been used from earliest times, but they rarely survive. This example dates from sometime between 1400 to 1000 BC.

The oval bailer was cut from a solid piece of wood. It has a short handle.

The seas and waterways around Scotland have made contact easier rather than acting as a barrier. Some types of boating equipment, such as this bailer, have scarcely changed, and are easily recognisable today.
