Flauchter spade
Add to album

A flauchter spade is used to remove turf from the surface of peat deposits. This example, made by a joiner, is originally from the Haughs of Devon, near Dollar in Clackmannanshire and dates from around 1907.

The crescent-shaped blade makes cutting the turf easier.

In the Highlands and Islands, where it is abundant, peat is still cut and dried for use as fuel in the home.
