Fashion plate, from Ackermanns Repository of Arts

This fashion plate is from 'Ackermann's Repository of Arts' and was made in 1818-9. It illustrates a lady's evening dress for use during the time of full mourning.

The material for the dress is black crepe and the jewellery is black jet.

In the 19th century the etiquette of mourning became more complex and more widespread especially for women. Queen Victoria was widowed in 1861 and wore mourning dress from then until her death 40 years later. Her example was followed by widows everywhere.
