Fashion plate, from The Queen
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates examples of outdoor wear for children and is dated 10 November, 1877.

Children at this time often were often dressed in replicas of their parents' outfits. Little girls' dresses were shorter and their underwear was allowed to show underneath. The smallest girl's pantalettes can be seen just above her barrel-striped stockings.

Popular in the 19th century, pantalettes were long loose drawers which showed below the skirt. They could also be detachable ruffles for the legs of drawers.
