Fashion plate, from The Queen
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates two day dresses and is dated 4 August, 1877. It is signed, 'P. VĂ©lard' and 'Bourguignon'.

The fashion at this time was for solid, stiff textiles. Instead of soft flounces, there were knife pleats. Interest in the back of dresses persisted and there were many fashion plates giving back views and profiles. Trains emphasized this trend.

At first, the Queen had little fashion content and its format was more like a newspaper. In 1862, it was taken over by William Edward Cox who introduced a stronger fashion element into the magazine.
