Fashion plate, from La Revue de la Mode

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Revue de la Mode, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1890, the plate illustrates a day dress and a hat. It is signed, 'Jules David' and 'E. Tailland'.

The dress has small 'gigot' or 'leg o' mutton' dress sleeves which rise high from the shoulder. The matching wide-brimmed straw hat is trimmed with a large ribbon.

Jules David (1808-1892) drew fashion plates for the French publication - Le Moniteur de la Mode - from 1843 until 1892. The plates were subsequently issued in many other European magazines.
