This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Illustrirte Frauen Zeitung, a fashion magazine published in Berlin. The plate illustrates day wear and evening wear and is dated 16 May, 1883. It is signed, 'Bertha Sell' or 'Sett'

The line of these 'tie-back' dresses is broken by puffs, shirrings and pleats. The 'egg-timer' look is achieved by corsetry, boning and lacing up the back. The waistlines are tight fitting and extend to a long point.

The Illustrirte Frauen Zeitung made its appearance in 1874 and was widely circulated throughout Europe.
