Fashion plate, from Illustrirte Frauen-Zeitung

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Illustrirte Frauen Zeitung, a fashion magazine published in Berlin. The plate illustrates a lady's walking dress and evening dresses for a lady and a young girl. Dated 19 October, 1882 it is signed, 'B.S'.

The line of these 'tie-back' dresses is broken by puffs, shirrings and pleats. The 'egg-timer' look is achieved by corsetry, boning and lacing up the back. The skirts are draped and trimmed at the back into elaborate bouffants.

The Illustrirte Frauen Zeitung first appeared in 1874 and was widely circulated throughout Europe.
