Fashion plate, from Der Bazar

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Der Bazar, an illustrated ladies' magazine published in Berlin. This plate shows seven fancy dress costumes and is dated January, 1895. It is signed on the right hand side with the monogram, 'HGB'.

One of ladies is dressed as a white dove. She has wings on her back and a white bird on her headdress. In this period, small animals and exotic birds were quite often used as decoration.

Der Bazar, which was also published in Dutch and Italian versions, started in 1854. One of its contributors was E Préval, a prolific artist of the 1860s whose fashion plates appeared in most of the best magazines of the time.
