Fashion plate, from Der Bazar

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Der Bazar, an illustrated ladies' magazine published in Berlin. This plate illustrates three fancy dress costumes and is dated 1 January, 1885. It is signed with the initials, 'H. Gr' and the monogram, 'HGB'.

The outfit on the right has a musical theme. It is decorated with numerous lines of staff and musical notes.

Complete books on the subject of fancy dress costume and etiquette could be purchased at this time, such as Ardern Holt's 'Fancy Dresses Described'. This publication lists numerous outfits and gives suggestions for hairstyles and accessories.
