This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from December, 1904, the plate illustrates a day dress with hat.
In this outfit, the bust is thrown forward by the shape of the corset and the skirt is tight over the hips, flaring to the ground in a bell-shape. This creates an 'S' shape which was very fashionable during this period.
Colour-printed fashion plates had begun to appear by the late 1880s. By the end of the 19th century, they had almost superseded hand-coloured plates. A few publications continued to issue hand-coloured plates into the early years of the 20th century.
