Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from May 1904, the plate illustrates an evening dress with a train.

In this outfit, the bust is thrown forward by the shape of the corset and the skirt is tight over the hips, flaring to the ground in a bell-shape. This creates an 'S' shape which was very fashionable during this period. Here, it is accentuated by a contrasting waist-band.

La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century. It was also one of the first magazines to include articles on underwear.
