Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from January, 1903, the plate illustrates an evening dress with a train.

In this outfit, the bust is thrown forward by the shape of the corset and the skirt is tight over the hips, flaring to the ground in a bell-shape. This creates an 'S' shape which was very fashionable during this period.

Colour-printed fashion plates had begun to appear by the late 1880s. By the end of the 19th century, they had almost superseded hand-coloured plates. A few publications continued to issue hand-coloured plates into the early years of the 20th century.
