This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1894, the plate shows five examples of hats.
The hats are elaborately trimmed with flowers, lace, ribbon and feathers.
La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century. It was also one of the first magazines to include articles on underwear.
