Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1890, the plate illustrates fancy dress outfits for three women. It is signed, 'Bonnard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.
The costume in the centre is from Egypt. The red and gold headdress is in the shape of a bird. The woman also wears gold armlets.
Towards the end of the 19th century, interest in the fancy dress ball was revived. Magnificent functions were held by the dominant hostesses of the day and were attended by members of the aristocracy.
