Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1887, the plate illustrates fancy dress costumes for two women and a young girl. It is signed, 'Bonnard' (in reverse) and 'I. Desgrange'.

The young girl in the centre is wearing a Japanese outfit. The woman on the right represents various games including chess, draughts and dominoes and cards.

Complete books on the subject of fancy dress costume and etiquette could be purchased at this time, such as Ardern Holt's 'Fancy Dresses Described'. This publication listed numerous outfits and gave suggestions for hairstyles and accessories.
