Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate illustrates two day dresses. It dates from 1884 and is signed, 'Bonnard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

The dress on the right shows how the bustle was quite exaggerated at this time and tended to arch up and out from the back. Both women are carrying parasols.

In the 1870-80s, parasols were elaborately decorated with embroidery, lace, flowers, ribbons and tassels. The stick and handle were often carved, with bows attached. The very smartest parasols had handles at the reverse end and were carried upside-down.
