Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1882, the plate illustrates two day dresses and hats. It is signed, 'Huard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

Bustles began to reappear in the 1880s and both these dresses show evidence of this. The outfits have wide-brimmed matching hats, worn tilted on the head. The lady on the left carries a parasol.

In the 1870-80s, parasols were elaborately decorated with embroidery, lace, flowers, ribbons and tassels. The stick and handle were often carved, with bows attached. The very smartest parasols had handles at the reverse end and were carried upside-down.
