Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate illustrates two day dresses and is dated 1880. It is signed, 'Huard' and 'Isabelle Desgrange'.

The figures are set against a seaside background with cliffs, boats and deck chairs on the beach. The dresses reflect the current popular fashion for tied-back skirts, high necklines, pleated trimmings and demi-trains.

Isabelle Desgrange (née Toudouze) was the daughter of Adèle Anaïs Toudouze, one of the most prolific and popular fashion plate artists of the mid-nineteenth century. Isabelle also produced plates for Le Follet, Le Monde Elégant and The Queen.
