Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1879, the plate illustrates a day dress and possibly a fancy dress costume. The plate is signed, 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

The figures are set against a coastal background of cliffs. The dress on the left reflects the current popular fashion for tied-back skirts, 'cuirasse' bodices, high necklines and pleated trimmings.

By 1874 the 'cuirasse' bodice had become an important element in fashion. It was a corset-shaped bodice with a design somewhat similar to that of a man's jacket.
