Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1879, the plate illustrates a wedding dress and an evening dress, both with trains. It is signed, 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

The wedding dress reflects the current popular fashion for tied-back skirts, 'cuirasse' bodices, high necklines, pleated trimmings and demi-trains.

By 1874 the 'cuirasse' bodice had become an important element in fashion. It was a corset-shaped bodice with a design somewhat similar to that of a man's jacket.
