Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1879, the plate illustrates an evening dress and a day dress, both with trains. The plate is signed, 'Bonnard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

These tie-back dresses with demi-trains were not as narrow or restricting as they appear. The fullness of the skirt was pulled to the back by interior tapes. The style of the bodice was known as a 'cuirasse' bodice.

By 1874 the 'cuirasse' bodice had become an important element in fashion. It was a corset-shaped bodice with a design somewhat similar to that of a man's jacket.
