Fashion plate, from La Mode IllustreéThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate illustrates two day dresses with trains. Dated 1877, it is signed, 'Bonnard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'. There was a great interest in the backs of dresses at this time and there were many fashion plates like this example, which gave back views and profiles. Long elaborate trains emphasized this trend. Adèle Anaïs Toudouze was one of the most prolific and popular fashion plate artists of the mid-nineteenth century. Examples of her work could be seen in many of the in the top fashion magazines of the time, including Le Follet and Le Magasin des Desmoiselles.
