Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1877, the plate illustrates three day dresses, two for women and one for a young girl. It is signed, 'D' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

There was a great interest in the backs of dresses at this time and there were many fashion plates, like this example, which gave back views and profiles. Long elaborate trains emphasized this trend.

Adèle Anaïs Toudouze was the second daughter of Alexandre-Marie Colin (1798-1875), a painter and lithographer. Along with her sisters, Héloïse and Laure, she was responsible for some of the most charming fashion plates of the mid-nineteenth century.
