Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1873, the plate illustrates an evening dress and a young girl's ball dress. It is signed, 'Réville' and 'Héloïse Leloir'.

The dress skirts are draped towards the back and trimmed with elaborate bouffants. The look is enhanced by long trains.

Héloïse Leloir was born in 1820 and was the eldest daughter of Alexandre Marie Colin (1798-1875), a painter and lithographer. She married a painter named Leloir and designed plates for the house of Mariton which were distributed to many French magazines.
